As of March 2001, there are a total of 405 faculty on full-time
basis in the medical school. They are divided among 27 departments
or divisions, with each department belonging to either basic medical
sciences or clinical sciences. The department activities of basic
medical sciences are closely correlated and fostered through the
control of the Chair of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. Each
clinical department is a functional unit, which performs patient
care, research and student education.
The control of the Medical School is vested in the Board of Trustees
of Sungkyunkwan University. The Dean is responsible for the operation
of the School through the President of the University. The faculty,
through the Faculty Executive Committee, which comprises the chairperson
from each department, has general authority over all educational
affairs except student admissions. Operational responsibilities
for specific affairs of the School are delegated to the standing
committees or offices, chaired by the Dean or each respective Associate
Dean.
Committee on Undergraduate Medical Education
The Committee on Undergraduate Medical Education (CUME) is the governing
body of the overall six-year curriculum and controls and coordinates
the three specific Committees on Basic Sciences Education, Problem-Based
Learning (PBL) Program and Clinical Clerkship. The CUME is charged
by the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and comprises each chair
of the above three specific committees, the Director of Medical
Education Office, a representative from each of the four major clinical
departments, two student representatives, and one invited guest
as a specialist in medical education.
Each of the three specific committees play a fundamental role in
planning, developing, monitoring, examining, and revising the curriculum
specific to the academic years of M1-M2, M3-M4 and M5-M6, respectively.
The CUME controls the whole curriculum through reviewing and approval
of the reports from each committee.
Each unit of the curriculum is developed according to the CUMEs
plan and is administered by a unit committee. Each unit committee
develops the components of its specific curriculum and arranges
its presentation.
