Medical Campus
SKKU Medical School is located on the Natural Sciences Campus of
Sungkyunkwan University in Suwon, a distance of 30 kilometers away
from Samsung Seoul Hospital. The Biomedical Science Building was
built in 1999 and became the headquarters for the Medical School.
The building contains a major research facility for the Medical
School as well as educational facilities for first and second year
students. A dormitory is available for students within the campus.
Basic Science Building
This six-story building with a total area of more than 33,000 square
meters is used not only for student education but serves as a basic biomedical research
center for the faculty of basic medical sciences and the researchers of Samsung Biomedical
Research Institute.
First and second year students study in labs and lecture rooms equipped
with a full networking system for multimedia. There are fourteen PBL tutorial
rooms equipped with LAN access and multimedia facilities. A main auditorium which sits
500 people is attached to the building as well as a medical library, where the people of
this building go to obtain main sources of information.
Medical Library
The library is located on the first floor of the Biomedical Science
Building and includes an area of 1,155 square meters. The Library has collections in both
medical and surgical specialties as well as basic sciences including periodicals, textbooks,
monographs, audiovisuals and computer softwares, which can be accessed via a
computer-based catalog system. It is networked with the University¡Æs
Central Library along with each of the Medical Information Centers from the Samsung Medical Center
Hospitals so that users can access vast amount of materials on-line and off-line. The librarians
offer computer-based literature searches, document delivery services and interlibrary
loans. Current Awareness services are also provided.
Samsung Medical Center Hospitals
The main teaching hospital of the medical school is Samsung Seoul
Hospital which is located in southern Seoul, 30 kilometers away from the medical school.
Samsung Seoul Hospital, which is where students spend their third through to their
sixth year has important educational facilities. The PBL program for third and fourth-year
students along with clinical clerkship rotations for fifth and sixth year students are held at
this hospital. For that purpose, the hospital has facilities for lectures, PBL tutorials, clinical
labs, learning materials, study rooms, and a library.
This brand new hospital opened its doors to patients in October,
1994 and contains 1135 general hospital beds. Facilities include a 58-bed intensive care
unit; a 40-bed intermediate care unit; a 15-bed cardiac care unit; a 30-bed intensive care nursery;
a 66-bed hematology/oncology unit; a 6-bed bone marrow transplant unit; a
32-bed general psychiatry unit; a 27-room inpatient operating suite with an adjoining
30-bed post-anesthesia unit; a 7-room day surgery center.
More than 55,000 patient admissions, along with more than 430,000
patient visits and 1,200,000 ambulatory patient visits allow medical students and house
officers the opportunity to observe a broad range of medical problems.
Each year, more than 24,000 surgical procedures, 600,000 radiological
procedures, 11,143,000 laboratory tests, 44,000 medical ultrasound diagnostic
tests, and 1,600 cardiac catheterizations are being performed.
In addition, the other hospitals of Samsung Medical Center - Kangbuk
Samsung Hospital with 624 beds, Masan Samsung Hospital with 612 beds and Samsung
Cheil Hospital with 275 beds offer excellent opportunities for students to broaden
their clinical experiences.
PBL facility
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a system that helps students develop
problem solving skills to deal with issues that arise. Small groups of five to six
students discuss and investigate with the help of the multimedia and Internet under the
guidance of a tutor rather than the traditional setting of a classroom. The PBL laboratory
is equipped with LAN access and multimedia facilities.
Computer Laboratory
The Computer laboratory is open to all medical students. It is
equipped with LAN access and powerful personal computers. Doctors
of the future are being educated; networked doctors.
