M.D. Course

The curriculum comprises six academic years designated M1 (first) to M6 (sixth year). This allows less artificial segregation between phases of premedical, preclinical and clinical parts of the curriculum than in traditional schools. In the first few years (M1 & M2), students are provided more opportunities to view medicine from the outside through various elective courses in humanities and social sciences while at the same time augmenting their knowledge for subsequent medical study through required courses in basic natural sciences and computer science. Studies on basic medical sciences begin in the second year (M2). Basic principles and theories are presented through Basic Life Sciences courses which are horizontally integrated, covering basic elementary topics that appear in the traditional curriculum of preclinical basic sciences. Through these courses, students are required to expand their vocabulary skills for the subsequent PBL program in M3 and M4 while have the opportunity to get a perspective view of medicine through a course called Introduction to Medicine. In M3 and M4, students are provided with the PBL program which is central to the medical curriculum. This is a vertically integrated curriculum so basic sciences, preclinical sciences, clinical sciences and clinical skills are organized into a cohesive program to emphasize the direct relevance of the outcome of basic science learning to clinical problems. The Patient and Doctor course is organized in relation to the results of the PBL problem cases and helps students acquire clinical skills through practice on simulated patients. During M5, students are required to take clinical clerkship rotations in major specialties of Samsung Seoul Hospital. M6 students can select more flexible elective rotations in minor specialties while have the opportunity to develop their careers in extramural settings.

Therefore, the curriculum of SKKUSOM is a highly ordered sequence of medical education with emphasis on the general professional education of physicians.
