Students must undertake the National Scholastic Aptitude Test and the entrance examination offered by SKKUSOM to be able to admit to the Medical School.

Student Enrollment

In 1997, the medical college admitted its first enrollment of 41 students. Initially, the admission committee intended to select 30% of students through the early admission and 70% by the general admission process. However, due to the same overall scores gained by two students, 13 students were selected by the early admission and 28 students by the general admission process. In 1998, 50% of the 39 freshmen were selected through the early admission and 50% by the general admission. In 1999, 40 students were admitted with the same proportion of selection. One student, who was admitted in 1997, withdrew from the medical college because of change in the field of study. Another student withdrew from the college after a year to enroll in another medical school. One student decided to take time off in his second year to serve in the military and three students failed to advance to the third year. Thus, to this date, there are 35 enrolled students in the third year, and all first and second year students are currently enrolled as admitted. Students spend their first and second year at Sungkyunkwan University College of Natural Sciences which is situated in Suwon. Students take various liberal arts courses during their first college year then begin to take basic medical science courses from the second year. Starting from the third year, students are exposed to the Problem Based Learning (PBL) education offered at the clinical medicine research facility of Samsung Medical Center (Il-won dong, Seoul) and receive medical education with a systemic approach to the human body and diseases. This type of education continues until the fourth year and clinical clerkship is scheduled for the fifth and sixth year of medical college.

Advancement

All students are required to complete the courses deemed necessary by the medical school. The courses are offered on the basis of the PBL system, which is more student-directed than the conventional system. To advance into the next year, all students are required to complete all mandatory subjects successfully with an average grade of C or above.

Graduation and Medical Licensure

To be an eligible candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine, students are required to earn a minimum of 252 credits in total by completing the 6-year course at the school. They are also subjected to pass successfully all examinations given by the medical school. At the end of six years, candidates eligible for graduation will be recommended to the President of Sungkyunkwan University for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine. Students should pass the National Medical Licensing Examination in order to practice as a physician in Korea at the end of the 6th year. The examination is run by the National Health Personnel Licensing Examination Board, a joint body of the various health-related professional organizations including the Korean Medical Association. Graduates of the School of Medicine are automatically eligible to sit for the examination to qualify for a license to practice medicine in Korea.
