Research:

Our primary research interest is antimicrobial resistance in bacterial pathogens. Antimicrobial drugs, once considered as miracle drugs to treat patients with infectious diseases, have been losing their activity due to widespread emergence of antimicrobial resistance. The emergence of resistant bacteria is among the most important global health threats. To investigate the antimicrobial resistance with increasing problem worldwide, we collaborate with the Asian-Pacific Research Foundation for Infectious Diseases (ARFID) and the Asian Network for Surveillance of Resistant Pathogens (ANSORP).

1. Antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria
We have investigated antimicrobial resistance in several major bacterial pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylcoccus aureus (MRSA), Enterococcus faecium, Acinetobacter baumannii, etc. We test the resistance rate and resistance mechanism in resistant strains. These data serve to help the choice of antimicrobials to treat infections in clinical settins.

2. Population structure of pathogenic bacteria
We have investigated population structure of pathogenic bacteria by using several molecular methods such as pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus sequence typing (MLST), and others. Through the investigation of bacterial population structure, we identify the spreading clones with high virulence or antimicrobial resistance. We also study molecular evolution in pathogenic bacteria.
