Research Interests:
- Epidemiology of Breast and Thyroid Cancer : focusiong on the role of diet and mammographic pattern.
- Nutritional Epidemiology- method and implementation
- Korean Emigrant Cohort Study : establishment of emigrant cohort in Kobe, Japan, and Yanbian, China
- Seoul Cancer Registry : active surveillance for the cancer incidence in Seoul, Korea
Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events (such as diseases) in specified populations, and the application of this study to control health problems. An epidemiologist¡¯s primary goal is finding out the cause (or risk factor) of a specific disease. Since breast and thyroid cancers are the most common cancers in Korean women, we are trying to elucidate the important risk factors for these two cancers through a hospital based case-control study. Nutritional factors are our primary risk factors of interest, and we have developed a Korean version of Food Frequency Questionnaire and a nutrition-analysis system. Our most recent grant is for the establishment of Korean Emigrant Cohort in Japan and China, to assess the environmental and genetic factors for obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Last but not the least; we have been conducting the Seoul Cancer Registry in collaboration with Seoul National University to produce, continuously, the cancer incidence in Seoul, Korea.
