The University's modern Natural Sciences Campus has been operational
since 1978. Situated within forty minutes' drive from central Seoul,
the 250-acre campus offers a diversity of facilities with educational
and research equipment for undergraduate and postgraduate students
in the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Science and
Technology, Sport Science, Pharmacy, and Medicine. The management
of the Natural Sciences Campus, although the campus is still growing,
is considered a paragon of educational administration in Korea.
When the new campus was built, the idea of separating a campus was
revolutionary in the Korean education world. Even today, the University
is the only school in Korea that operates separate campuses by specialty.
Some comprehensive universities located in big cities have tried
to meet the need for expansion by founding a separate, usually smaller,
school in the provinces. This "duplication system" has
its limits by nature?ack of faculty, facilities, and funding.
Besides solving the problem of physical expansion, the separate
campus system brought the University limitless opportunities for
growth. Suwon is one of the cities which preserve the traditional
beauty of the Chos¢¨on era, but it now also flourishes
as a center for business, education and economic research, thanks
to its proximity to major industrial complexes.
¢È In an effort to serve society by building a bridge
between academia and the industrial sector, another initiative?he
Science-Technology Park (STP)?s being implemented on campus. The
University, industries in the surrounding area, and the government
have joined hands in this tripartite project.
